Calexico’s new album, “Carried to Dust” comes out next week, September 9, specifically, and the next week, September 20, they begin their worldwide tour in Tucson, with a benefit for Arizona District 8 Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (up for re-election this year) at the Rialto Theatre. Tickets are $25 or $10 if you’re a UA student. And whether or not they allow you to buy multiple tickets with a UA ID or you have to show your UA ID at the door, I haven’t quite figured out.
The band has been good about keeping this album in the closet. Advanced copies are circulating reviewers now, but all of us lowly fans get via the official site, MySpace and various blogs is one mp3 and video for the single “Two Silver Trees”. The video was shot in various locations around Tucson, including, very prominently, inside the bar at the Taproom at Hotel Congress and “The Boneyard,” an area on Davis-Monthan Air Force Base used for the storage and the cannibalizing of old military aircraft. The song sounds good and the reviews have been glowing, although “Garden Ruin,” which I hated, also got glowing reviews.
There is also an NPR video which features a few excerpts from some additional new tracks, as well as video of ultra-white Joey Burns walking around and talking about Tucson.
